The L3/38 was an upgraded version of the L3/35. It replaced the leaf-spring suspension with torsion bars, and upgraded the armament. 12 L3/35's were upgraded to L3/38's, and 24 were sold to Brazil.
Although the L3 series was inferior to contemporary tanks, it continued to serve with the Italian army and later Axis vassal states throught World War II, as well as in numerous minor wars in Africa and the Middle East.
The L6/40 light tank was based on the L3/38 chassis.
